Sluyterman van Loo Foundation

General
The Sluyterman van Loo Foundation - Incentive Fund for projects for elderly people - aims to promote the well-being of elderly people in the Netherlands and Dutch Antilles. The foundation gives grants to initiatives and projects designed to

- increase the independence of elderly people
- preserve their autonomy and dignity
- give more meaning to life
- encourage a positive image

Regular grants
The foundation supports a wide range of projects: from initiatives for the more youthful and active to projects aimed at enhancing the well-being of the most vulnerable groups.

The foundation's work is made possible by the income from its capital.

Its budget for awarding grants is around 2 million euros per year.

Themed grants program
Every three years the foundation selects a theme as the focus of its grants program. This theme receives special attention, and extra resources are made available for it.

The theme of the grants program 2007-2009 is ‘Power of Elderly People’. Many elderly people want to make a difference to other people's lives and to use their talents for the benefit of society. They like to be and feel useful. The ever-growing group of elderly people in the Netherlands possesses a wealth of knowledge, experience and skills. These rich resources can be drawn upon to create opportunities for the future at both the social and the individual level.

Cultural activities
An important task of the Board of Trustees is the upkeep of the listed building Akerendam in Beverwijk, the seat of the foundation. The Board wants the house and gardens to have a recognisable place in society, and encourages this by organising cultural activities and conferences.

Housing projects for vulnerable elderly people
The Sluyterman van Loo Foundation supports the development of innovative housing projects for vulnerable elderly people, and initiated the Nieuw Akerendam complex in Beverwijk. The foundation also gives grants to enable new housing projects for vulnerable groups in Kennemerland.

Scientific research
The foundation promotes scientific research on the subject of growing older, and encourages the development of policy ideas relating to elderly people in the Netherlands.
The Sluyterman van Loo endowed chair in Applied Social Gerontology at the Free University (VU) in Amsterdam is financed by the foundation.

Administration
The foundation is administrated by the Board of Trustees. This board holds four meetings per year, at which decisions are made about the award of grants to projects. Preparation of the decision-making is carried out by the foundation's office.

The Sluyterman van Loo Foundation is a member of FIN, the Association of Foundations in the Netherlands.
